FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Am I allowed to grow cannabis at home?
  • Each state has different home growing (cultivation) laws. Check our State Law page for the latest home cultivation laws in your state.
How much space is needed to grow?
  • It depends on how much available space you have. Our smallest Grow Space covers a 2 ft. x 2ft. Area and is 4 feet tall. It fits most closet spaces. Our largest Grow Space covers a 8 ft. x 4 ft. Area and is 6 feet tall. Typically people will place this in a basement or have it take up the majority of a room. It really depends on how much space you have available. Our expert technician can help identify a Grow Space that works best for your home. Call Us Now
How long will it take to grow a plant?
  • It can take as little as 2 months to and up to about 5 months. It depends on the genetics of the seed you choose. Grow Guys recommended grow schedule achieves seed-to-use in about 11-12 weeks.
How do I get seeds?
  • There are many trustworthy seed distributors that provide quality products. We partner with many of these distributors to lower the costs for our client family. You can access the seed distributors through our Seeds page.
How much cannabis will I have per plant?
  • This is determined by many factors – strain, genetics, grow conditions, watering, nutrient intake, etc. For beginners, we say about 40 grams, or 1.5 ounces; however, it can be much more!  [Learn more about training techniques you can use to increase your yield here.] [NOT YET]
Will my electric bill go up?
  • Your electric bills will go up very slightly (roughly $10 per month); however, you will still be saving a lot of money compared to buying from a dispensary. Click to see how much you can save!
How do I get soil?
  • Grow Guys custom soil blend is included for the estimated number of plants that can fit your Grow Space package. How do I know my plant is finished and ready to harvest?
  •  You can typically gauge the harvest time from the description in the seed profile when purchasing; however, we suggest adding a week or two to those estimates. For a more exact determination, you harvest when 20-25% of your trichomes (the hair-like crystals forming on the leaves) turn an amber color. They will turn from clear to milky white, and then amber.
How do I harvest?
  • We suggest using 24-inch shears to cut the very bottom of the base of the plant. The stem can get quite thick so you want to have a good set. Practice caution when using the shears. You can then hang the plant upside down by securing zip ties, string, twine, etc. around some ideal branches in order to fasten to the top of your Grow Space. You can remove you light(s) or hang the plants around it. Keep the drying plants in the dark with a relative humidity of about 40%-50% and the temperature between 65-75 degrees F. You can determine when it is time to trim and cure if the branches begin to “snap” instead of “bend”. Grow Guys also offers in-home visitation services to help you harvest. How do I trim?
  • Prepare a clean space to work with when trimming your cannabis. Use a quality set of pruning shears to cut each branch separately. Prune the fan leaves (large leaves) – you can save these and use them to make edibles! Now prune the buds from the base of each stem. This can take some time depending on the size of your plant(s). Once you have completed trimming all of your buds you are ready to cure them.
What is curing?
  • Curing is a process to remove excess moisture in the harvested cannabis before use. This helps prevent mold while also allowing for a “smoother” smoke and a longer shelf-life of potency and taste. Grow Guys suggests curing in a large seal-tight glass jar and using a humidity pack to regulate the proper relative humidity (~60%). Fill the jar to about ¾ capacity. You can insert a small hydrometer to gauge the temperature and humidity within the jar(s). Place the jars in a dark space with an acceptable temperature range of 60-75 degrees. After 3-5 days, begin opening the jar, or “burping”, for 20-30 mins a day. Grow Guys encourages you to begin use after those two weeks; however, continued curing may help improve its quality further.
How long do I cure my harvested cannabis?
  • Professionals cure from 2 weeks to a few months. Grow Guys encourages you to begin use after those two weeks; however, continued curing may help improve its quality further.

Can I use tap water to water my plants?
  • It depends. Grow Guys suggests testing the pH level of your tap water first. You can purchase inexpensive pH testing kits here. The acceptable pH can range from 5.5 – 7.0. You can also use pH Up and pH Down products to help adjust your tap waters’ pH levels easily. We also suggest letting your tap water sit overnight before watering your plants to acclimate to room temperature and it also helps to remove minerals from the water. If you’re not sure, you can use distilled water – just be sure the pH levels are in range. You can always Google the brand’s pH before buying.
How often do I water my plants?
  • This depends on many factors as well – age, temperature, humidity, plant appearance, etc. Here is a rough schedule: When the seed is placed into the soil, Grow Guys recommends using a spray bottle to keep the soil damp for the first week/week and a half. Spray every few hours or once the top layer of soils appears dry. Then, begin watering every 3-4 days with very low pressure (do not pour a lot of water at once) for another 1-2 weeks. Next, begin watering every 2-3 days. Keep in mind, if using Grow Guys soil blend, you will add in liquid nutrients to your water (sometimes only water). Click to view Grow Guys recommended watering schedule. A watering trick is to test the weight of the pot. Test the weight when dry and when watered to get a gauge of its weight during each. When it feels light/dry, you can water.

Do I need to move my plants around at all?
  •  No, you do not need to move them around once in the tent. You can move them in order to dispose of the runoff water (water that drains through the fabric pot and into the drainage pan), but it is not needed in terms of the light intake. Grow Guys does recommend “training” your plant, which includes manipulation of the plant itself in order to increase your yield – Learn more here
Will growing cannabis make my house smell?
  • Grow Guys installs ventilation equipment that eliminates the smell while the Grow Space is kept enclosed. It is possible for the odor to be released when the Grow Space is opened.
What should the temperature in my Grow Space be? What should the humidity in my Grow Space be?
  • Seedling Stage: 65-80 degrees / 60%-70%
  • Vegetative Stage: 70-85 degrees / 50%-65%
  • Flowering Stage: 65-80 degrees / 40%-50% (Higher than 60% may result in mold)
  • Do not be discouraged if the temperature and humidity levels are not always exact. Cannabis is very resilient.
What do I do if my plants are showing signs of issues?

Is there are any difference between growing indica and sativa strains?
  • In terms of growing, the major difference is indica strains are typically shorter and bushier while sativa strains are taller. Indica strains are generally recognized as “easier” to grow; however, Grow Guys can help you grow both to perfection.
How do I regulate my temperature?
  • You can cool the Grow Space by including extra fans, increasing the exhaust fan’s speed, or placing an air conditioner in the surrounding room. You can warm the Grow Space by lowering the exhaust fan’s speed, placing a space heater in the surrounding room, or even by putting a rug underneath your Grow Space.
How do I regulate my humidity?
  • You can increase your humidity by including a humidifier in a Grow Space or by lowering the exhaust fan’s speed. You can decrease your humidity by including a dehumidifier in a Grow Space or by increasing the exhaust fan’s speed.
What level should my light be set to? How long do my lights stay on?
  • Once your seeds sprout from the soil, set the light level to around 20-25%. Increase the level 5% every 3-4 days until you reach 90%. Leave it at 90% for the remainder of the grow cycle. Try to keep the light around 15-20 inches away from the top of the plant(s). Grow Guys suggests using an 18-hour on and 6-hour off schedule for autoflowers. For photoperiods, run 18-hours on and 6-hours off until you want them to flower. When you want to transition to flowering, run the lights for 12 hours and then shut them off for 12 hours until competition.
